Paul Merson has taken the bitter pill when Chelsea mocked his prediction for their FA Cup fourth-round replay against Aston Villa.
The Arsenal veteran predicted Villa will reach the FA Cup fifth round with a win over the Blues on Wednesday night.
He wrote for Sky Sports prior of the match at Villa Park: “It was bad against Liverpool, but it got worse against Wolves.” Chelsea cannot afford to lose 4-2 at home, no matter how much they admire Wolves.
“I’m not giving Chelsea a chance on Wednesday night. That cannot be correct. When was the last time I mentioned that as a Chelsea fan?
“Only a few years ago, the opposing team would have no chance against Chelsea. Everyone would be astonished if they won the game.”
Merson’s forecast, however, did not come true, as Chelsea defeated Villa 3-1 to knock them out of the competition, and the analyst has now come out to contradict himself in a post-match comment on X.
He wrote on his Instagram on Thursday, “What a result, Chelsea. “I didn’t expect that, which is why I stopped gambling.”
Many consider Chelsea’s performance against Villa to be their best of the season, and we can only hope they maintain the same energy and competitiveness throughout the season.
