The recent decision by the Spanish Football Association to revoke Mason Greenwood’s possible four-match suspension from Getafe’s roster has drawn notice. In Getafe’s most recent game against Rayo Vallecano, Greenwood—who is on loan from Manchester United—was shown the red card for allegedly swearing and using foul language towards the referee.
The Spanish FA stepped in after Getafe’s appeal, claiming that Greenwood’s remarks were actually about fouls against him rather than the referee specifically. They made it clear that their job was to identify any major inaccuracies in the referee’s account of events, not to officiate games. They discovered that the referee’s account was erroneous and that there had been a glaring error after watching the video.
The committee emphasised video footage that captured Greenwood uttering the words “one, two, three, four, f***.” A possible four-game penalty would have followed the retention of the red card. He did, however, participate in Getafe’s most recent win over RCD Espanyol following the successful appeal.
The official post-match report from the referee described Greenwood’s protest-related ejection and accused use of obscene language. On the basis of video evidence, the FA committee disapproved, nonetheless. After Manchester United decided to let Greenwood continue his career elsewhere due to objections from Old Trafford supporters following a domestic violence court case, Greenwood was loaned to Getafe. Charges were dropped, but Greenwood moved to Getafe on loan after United conducted an internal probe.
