The Spanish FA stepped in after Getafe’s appeal, claiming that Greenwood’s remarks were actually about fouls against him rather than the referee specifically. They made it clear that their job was to identify any major inaccuracies in the referee’s account of events, not to officiate games. They discovered that the referee’s account was erroneous and that there had been a glaring error after watching the video.
The committee emphasised video footage that captured Greenwood uttering the words “one, two, three, four, f***.” A possible four-game penalty would have followed the retention of the red card. He did, however, participate in Getafe’s most recent win over RCD Espanyol following the successful appeal.
The official post-match report from the referee described Greenwood’s protest-related ejection and accused use of obscene language.
